In week five of the 2020 Open Enrollment, 504,041 people selected plans using the HealthCare.gov platform, reaching to total of 2,876,998 signups since Nov. 1. Over 2 million of those are people renewing coverage for 2020. About 750,000 are new to the ACA Marketplace. Enrollment numbers are lower than last year by about 10 percent.
On Nov. 1, Healthcare.gov experienced technical issues which blocked an estimated 100,000 people from signing up on the first day of the enrollment period. According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the technical problems with the website were addressed the same day and since then, the operations have been normal.
This is the seventh year that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has offered millions of Americans access to health insurance. In 2020, premiums have dropped an average of 4 percent, and 20 more insurers are offering policies through the ACA. This is the first year that ACA marketplace plans stabilizing after years of regulatory concern.
Almost 8.5 million people enrolled in health insurance coverage under the ACA last year. You still have time to get covered for 2020, but the Open Enrollment period ends this Sunday, Dec. 15. Go to Healthcare.gov now to get covered.
