Chief Scientific & Medical Officer, National Psoriasis Foundation

Location: Alexandria, VA

The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) is a dynamic and growing non-profit organization dedicated to research, advocacy, and patient and medical education as we work toward a cure for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and support those impacted by psoriatic disease. The NPF is seeking an experienced individual as our Chief Scientific & Medical Officer.

Under general direction of the President & CEO, the Chief Scientific & Medical Officer is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and overall management of the mission related efforts in Research and Medical Programs. The role will be responsible for the research activities of the organization including development and implementation of policies and programs which support the NPF’s overall strategic plan and objectives in research; and will be responsible for overseeing the educational programing and outreach activities for medical professionals serving patients with psoriatic disease.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Leads the research and medical programs activities for NPF, including the development of annual goals and budgets.
  • Collaborates with external partners, organizations and researchers to advance psoriatic disease research studies.
  • Oversees the Research Grants and Fellowship programs, Patient Centered Research activities (CDC Health Outcomes grant, Citizen Pscientist platform, Bio-Bank activities, Research Ambassador Program, and Annual Survey) and publication of NPF’s peer review Journal of Psoriasis & Psoriatic Arthritis.
  • Stays up to date on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis research and serves as an expert resource for NPF staff, Board of Directors, and external agencies, companies and individuals; and supports Foundation departments with information, expertise and content to support NPF’s communications, fundraising, advocacy and outreach efforts.
  • Serve as NPF representative on the NIH Accelerating Medicines Partnership® (AMP®) program-Autoimmune and Immune Mediated (AIM) initiative and communicates with the leadership of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).
  • Communicates outcomes, progress and impact of NPF’s research program to a wide array of constituents.
  • Plans and directs scientific meetings/conferences (i.e. Research Symposium and Research Training Symposium) to advance NPF research goals.
  • Represents NPF at national and international meetings related to issues that will further the research agenda for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
  • Oversees the organization’s continuing medical educational programing (CME), and directs and maintains the accreditation for NPF.
  • Oversees the organization’s professional educational programs, including live events and online/web activities.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Medical Board, working closely with the Medical Board and key NPF personnel to accomplish its charge in the areas of medical treatment coverage, medical education needs, outreach, advocacy and health care policy.
  • Assists the Medical Board and Scientific Advisory Committee with writing papers and submissions of manuscripts to medical or scientific journals.
  • Leads the medical professional membership activities, managing communications with healthcare professionals and developing and maintaining relationships with external medical professional organizations.
  • Provides leadership, direction and monitors the performance of staff in the Research and Clinical Affairs Department.

Qualifications

  • M.D. or PhD in biology, immunology, genetics or related field preferred
  • Clinical/research experience in psoriatic disease or other immune-mediated diseases is desired
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Experience with managing continuing medical education (CME) programs and planning of medical professional educational events
  • Experience with applying for and/or managing NIH and Foundation funding
  • Ability to convey scientific and technical information to a diverse group of audiences
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Ability to master disease and treatment information in order to serve as internal and external resource
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to travel (up to 50%)
  • Ability to function in team oriented, collaborative environment
  • Ability to think strategically
  • Ability to network and establish relationships with key stakeholders, including lay and professional volunteers, medical professionals, donors, staff and industry
  • Candidate to be based in the Alexandria, VA area
