Financial toxicity, the physical, material, and psychological burden that results from the high costs of medical care, has emerged as one of the most consequential yet under addressed barriers to health for patients living with serious illness and the caregivers who support them.
Fixing one of the biggest barriers to access
We envision a society in which all people have access to quality health care that respects personal goals and aspirations and is designed around the health outcomes most important to patients. One of the biggest barriers to access is the rising cost of care, especially for the more than 200 million American with chronic diseases and disabilities.
Our efforts include addressing out-of-pocket costs and cost shifting; advancing reforms to utilization management practices such as prior authorization and step therapy; and engaging on broader drivers of health care costs, including drug pricing, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) implementation, most-favored-nation (MFN) proposals, tariffs, and hospital billing practices.
