Guest Blog: Finding Strength in Community: National Infertility Awareness Week
By: Simeonne Bookal, Senior Manager, Communications and Programs, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association
National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW), observed from April 21-27, holds significant importance for millions of individuals and families nationwide. Established by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association in 1989 and federally recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2010, NIAW serves as a platform to educate, advocate, and unite those affected by infertility and family building challenges.
At its core, NIAW aims to dispel myths, combat misinformation, and advocate for policies that support individuals and couples navigating the often-complex journey of infertility. In a world where personal decisions regarding family building can face increasing barriers, NIAW provides a crucial opportunity to amplify stories of hope, resilience, and perseverance.
RESOLVE, as a longstanding advocate for patients, empowers individuals through knowledge, fosters supportive communities, and unites voices in advocacy efforts. By using the hashtag #LeaveYourMark2024 during NIAW, we invite the community to engage in meaningful dialogue. Participants are encouraged to share their stories, reclaim the definition of family, and shed light on the challenges of infertility, fostering awareness and understanding.
One poignant symbol of solidarity during NIAW is the illumination of landmarks and monuments across the country in the color orange, symbolizing infertility awareness. From Philadelphia to New York City, iconic structures will serve as beacons of support, reminding us of the strength found in community and shared experiences.
Throughout the week, professionals and community members host a variety of events and fundraisers — both virtual and in person — providing opportunities for education, connection, and empowerment. From online forums to local gatherings, individuals can engage with others facing similar challenges, find support, and access valuable resources.
For those looking to take a stand beyond NIAW, RESOLVE offers numerous avenues for involvement, from advocacy campaigns to fundraising initiatives. By joining forces with RESOLVE, individuals can contribute to ongoing efforts to shape policies, raise awareness, and improve access to care for those on the family building journey.
As NIAW approaches, we urge the community to embrace the opportunity to share and speak out about the experiences of millions of individuals and families affected by infertility. Together, let’s raise our voices in solidarity, and continue the fight for inclusive, supportive, and accessible pathways to building families. Join us in the five-day NIAW challenge, where each day presents a prompt to spark conversation and drive action.
