The NHC Sets out a New Roadmap for 2025–2027

By Leah Poffenberger, Senior Manager, Communications

Every three years, the National Health Council (NHC) launches a new strategic plan to guide the organization as it tackles evolving challenges in health care and continue the mission of putting patients first. The 2021–2024 strategic plan prioritized access, affordability, health equity, and patient-centered policies. As the NHC looks ahead to 2025 through 2027, the new strategic plan builds upon past successes to address the needs of patients, family caregivers, and their advocates.

Building on Progress
The 2021–2024 strategic plan laid the foundation for meaningful advancements in health policy and patient advocacy. During this time, the NHC focused on:

    • Prioritizing patient health and outcomes through improved access, affordability, and innovation.
    • Driving adoption of patient-centric policies and practices.
    • Promoting health equity across the health care ecosystem.
    • Ensuring patients are at the center of every health decision-making process.
    • Supporting and amplifying the impact of NHC member organizations.

These priorities remain critical to the interests of patients, caregivers, and advocates. Recognizing this, the NHC refined and expanded these focus areas for the new plan. The 2025–2027 strategic plan reflects the NHC’s commitment to continuity, growth, and patient empowerment while adapting to the evolving health landscape.

Key Areas of Focus for 2025-2027

  1. Advance Patient-Driven Health Policy and Practices
The NHC will leverage its expertise, reputation, and diverse membership to champion policies that enhance patient access and improve health outcomes. By influencing policy reforms and driving best practices, we aim to foster a health system that truly serves patients.

  2. Prioritize Patient Input in Health Decision-Making
Patients, caregivers, and advocates must be engaged directly and meaningfully in every aspect of health decision-making. The NHC will continue to facilitate opportunities for patients to have a voice in shaping health policies and innovations that impact their lives.

  3. Advance Health Equity
Eliminating disparities within the health care system is essential. The NHC is committed to ensuring that all patients, regardless of background or circumstances, receive equitable care. We will promote policies and initiatives that address systemic inequities and ensure our member organizations reflect the communities they serve.

  4. Amplify Patient Organization Impact
NHC member organizations play a crucial role in supporting patients and caregivers. To enhance their effectiveness, the NHC will provide expert guidance, educational resources, and operational support to help these organizations achieve their missions and drive meaningful change.

  5. Strengthen NHC’s Capacity to Achieve Its Mission
To sustain and expand our impact, we must continuously evolve as an organization. Strengthening our internal capacity will allow us to better serve our members, advocate for patients, and navigate the shifting health care landscape with agility and purpose.

Moving Forward with Purpose
As the NHC embarks on this next era, the organization remains committed to ensuring that patient voices are heard, their needs are prioritized, and their health outcomes are improved. The new strategic plan builds upon our achievements and sets the stage for future advancements in patient-centered care.

The NHC invites our members, partners, and stakeholders to join us in advancing this vision. By working together, we can drive meaningful change and ensure that patients remain at the center of health care decision-making.
