Webinar Summary: Coronavirus Preparedness for People with Chronic Diseases
By Theo Smith, Communications Intern
On Friday, March 13, the National Health Council (NHC) held a webinar on coronavirus preparedness for people with chronic diseases. COVID-19, commonly referred to as Coronavirus, is a respiratory disease caused by a new virus strain that has yet to be identified in humans before. This virus is thought to spread from person-to-person through coughs and sneezes from an infected person.
The NHC webinar featured Albert Rizzo, MD, FACP, Chief Medical Officer at the American Lung Association, and Stacie Bell, PhD, Chief Scientific & Medical Officer, at the National Psoriasis Foundation. Dr. Albert Rizzo identified at-risk populations for coronavirus, including: people over 60, people who have serious chronic conditions like lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, as well as people taking immunosuppressants. During the webinar, the speakers discussed ways patient groups can assist their members and other constituents in reducing the impact of coronavirus. The speakers focused on how patients with chronic diseases can avoid illness, what to do if they feel sick, and how patient groups can prepare to field inquiries from their members about the pandemic.

Coronavirus is causing significant concerns globally. Public health officials recommend social distancing in order to slow the spread of coronavirus. It is essential to “flatten the curve,” or spread out the cases of coronavirus, in order to prevent overwhelming the health care system.
