Getting to Know: Steve Chaplain, Chief Financial Officer
Following is a Q&A to get to know Steve Chaplain, Chief Financial Officer who began working at the National Health Council (NHC) in December 2020.
Putting Patients First (PFF) Blog: Why did you want to work for the NHC?
I became really excited to be a part of the NHC after noticing huge disparities in how several populations in my neighborhood were adversely affected by COVID-19. I believed this was a great opportunity for me to put my experience to work helping support an organization to improve equity in health care delivery to all Americans.
PPF Blog: As a member of the NHC’s senior leadership team, you provide strategic direction and implementation of day-to-day financial, human resources, and information technology management functions. How does this move the organization forward?
I believe each of these functions move the organization forward when obstacles are removed from their paths. This allows the team to make actionable decisions without undue friction and noise. If I can provide financial information to our decision makers in a timely fashion, they can make the best decisions with the limited resources. Likewise, if I can support the team by ensuring that I have taken care of or resolved all compliance issues, the team can focus on their programs. We do not want lack of information, lack of human resource policies, or insufficient technology to hinder the team from achieving mission–critical successes.
PFF Blog: What upcoming projects are you excited about working on?
I am excited about relieving some administrative pain points the organization is currently experiencing. I get excited to create the processes and systems that allow staff to be unencumbered in their day-to-day activities. I am also very excited to begin providing technical assistance to our VHA members. This will be a great opportunity for me to learn more about our members, what their needs are, and help them in meaningful ways that will allow them to focus on their missions more effectively.
PFF Blog: What’s your favorite thing about working at the NHC?
Being here just a month, I have to say, it is the people. I am amazed at the commitment and passion I have seen at the organization. Also, since I have not met anyone in person yet, I must say I really have enjoyed how the team works together remotely, and how they have formed a real bond with one another.
PFF Blog: Tell us something about you personally. What do you do outside of work?
Pre–COVID, I would burn off energy by playing water polo and ultimate frisbee. Until we get back to a sense of normalcy, I have taken up pickleball and golf, both are fairly COVID-friendly activities. Also, I have been teaching my 9-year-old son all the family favorite board games of my youth, particularly chess, Monopoly, and Risk.
