Director, Public Policy, Lupus Foundation of America

Location: This position is based in the national headquarters of the Lupus Foundation of America in Washington, D.C.
Reports to: Senior Vice President, Advocacy & Government Relations

 The Director of Public Policy is an integral member of the Lupus Foundation of America’s Advocacy and Government Relations team by assisting in implementing the Foundation’s year round public policy program. This position is based in the national headquarters of the Lupus Foundation of America in Washington, D.C.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for federal regulatory and legislative issues with a specific focus public policy related to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), drug development and innovation and the Foundation’s Patient Focused Drug Development initiatives, including reauthorization of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act and legislative and regulatory issues related to the 21st Century Cures Act.
  • Responsible for attending meetings, drafting and submitting regulatory comments on FDA related and other regulatory issues.
  • Work closely with Research Department to lead the Foundation’s patient registry, RAY: Research Accelerated by You.
  • Responsible for managing the Lupus Research Action Network (LRAN), an LFA initiative to promote participation in clinical trials, and coordinating LRAN activities related to a federal grant with the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health.
  • Create and implement grassroots and grasstops advocacy campaigns, including developing advocacy alerts and updates, talking points and supporting materials and strategies for advancing the Foundation’s federal policy priorities, including lupus programs at the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the HHS Office of Minority Health.
  • Represent the Foundation in meetings with Members of Congress and regulatory agencies.
  • Work with the Senior Vice President, Advocacy & Government Relations in engaging the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council and Medical and Scientific Advisory Council.
  • Participate in and build strategic coalitions on federal and state policy issues.
  • Support planning and implementation of the Foundation’s National Advocacy Summit, grasstops fly-in and other advocacy conferences and events.
  • Create policy communications for distribution on the Foundation’s website, social media, electronic newsletters and other communications channels.
  • Convey a professional and positive image that reflects favorably on the Foundation.
  • Other duties as assigned. 


  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university with seven+ years related experience preferably on Capitol Hill, the patient advocacy community, in government or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proficient computer and internet research skills are a must.
  • Experience tracking and monitoring legislation and regulations and in policy analysis.
  • Understanding of the legislative process and FDA regulatory process.
  • Experience developing and conducting grassroots campaigns and working with advocates.
  • Detail oriented and strong organizational skills required. Capable of handling diversified assignments and highly adaptable.
  • The ability to work well in a fast-paced environment interfacing with all levels of management and volunteers, as well as Congressional staff, elected officials and representatives of government agencies.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
