Executive Vice President, External Relations, Cancer Support Community

The Cancer Support Community (CSC) is seeking an Executive Vice President, External Relations to be based in Washington, DC. Reporting to the CEO, the EVP, External Relations will provide leadership, direction, and coordination for a comprehensive development and communications program that secures financial resources and elevates CSC’s position and reputation. The EVP, External Relations will be expected to design, implement, and manage an integrated development plan focused on innovative nonprofit fundraising methods. The EVP, External Relations, will also be responsible for furthering CSC’s mission through coordinated marketing and communications efforts.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

Development (building relationships)

  • Establish short- and long-term development plans.
  • Plan and implement, in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, annual and longer-term development and strategic marketing plans detailing the goals, objectives, and action steps for individual, foundation, corporate, government, planned giving, special events and in-kind giving. Special emphasis is placed on strengthening individual/major gift donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Provide professional leadership to the development/communications/digital staff to develop and implement strategies which assist in the acquisition of philanthropic resources for furthering the purposes of Cancer Support Community.
  • Provide professional leadership to the Board of Directors, Development Committee, and development/marketing staff to develop and implement strategies which assist in the acquisition of philanthropic resources
  • Collaborate with CSC’s Network Partners on national fundraising campaigns.
  • Plan and produce special events designed to achieve income and community awareness objectives.
  • Oversee Development Team to develop and implement fundraising strategies and appropriate follow-up action, including stewardship plans, solicitation materials, correspondence, and reports as necessary to promote donor participation, recognition, and cultivation.
  • Lead recruitment efforts related to research and advocacy groups.
  • Diversify funding base by creating new revenue streams.
  • Oversee fundraising events.
  • Work with CEO, Board of Directors, and Development Team to identify, cultivate, solicit, and expand the number of individuals, major and planned giving prospects and donors, including family foundations across the country.
  • Manage and build on-line giving programs.
  • Maximize the use of a CRM database for fundraising moves management.

Marketing and Communications

  • Plan and execute, in partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and development/marketing department staff, a strategic and integrated marketing and communications plan to build brand positioning and familiarity. Plan elements include internal and external communications, spokesperson training, website content, electronic media, and print collateral.
  • Develop, implement, and execute strategic marketing plans to drive revenue generation and enhance brand awareness.
  • Ensure the communications and digital teams deliver effective campaigns to generate leads, increase brand awareness and drive sales growth.
  • Manage marketing and communications budgets, allocating resources effectively and optimizing marketing spends to achieve maximum ROI.
  • Oversees and evaluates market research/new industry opportunities and adjusts marketing strategy to meet changing market and competitive conditions.
  • Develop compelling content, SEO, and digital strategy to drive lead generation and attract new program participants, advocates, survey participants, supporters, donors, and partners.
  • Collaborate with CSC’s Network Partners on national branding opportunities.
  • Develop and oversee a culturally inclusive marketing and communications plan that targets external audiences and articulates CSC’s mission, vision, accomplishments, and programs.
  • Oversee Communications Team to develop and execute a robust communications and branding strategy for organization-wide and network partners efforts, including fundraising and programmatic efforts.
  • Ensure CSC’s website and other digital properties are relevant to users and reflect state-of-the-art design and functionality.
  • Lead CSC’s media strategy.
  • Identify strategic opportunities to heighten CSC’s awareness, including by generating press coverage for release of key reports, program initiatives, and network activities.
  • Oversee processes to ensure brand strategy and key messages are used in the production of all departments’ communications and marketing. Ensure brand and key messages are used consistent across all constituencies
  • Identify and pursue cause-related marketing opportunities for CSC.
  • Work to strategically position key CSC executives & staff in external meetings to build CSC’s brand. As appropriate, serve as a spokesperson and external representative for CSC.
  • Work to move CSC to use CRM and other data effectively to identify specific audiences/key stakeholder, personalize marketing to them and measure impact.

Digital

  • Support Digital Team’s innovations and strategic direction to support CSC’s mission of providing support, fostering compassionate communities, and breaking down barriers to care for everyone impacted by cancer.
  • Ensure coordination of marketing, innovation, and cross-promotion in Digital Team’s efforts with other marketing and communications efforts organization-wide, including social media, apps, virtual programs, and other channels/media.
  • Maximize and leverage digital data and analytics to identify opportunities.

Management

  • Monitor and manage the performance of CSC’s teams focused on: Development; Communications ; Digital.
  • Lead teams, including developing goals, coaching, performance assessment, and identification and filling of skills and capacity gaps, motivate and retain staff members.
  • Ensure coordination and cross-promotion between Communications, Digital, & Development Teams’ efforts, as well as between all marketing, communications, and fund development efforts across CSC HQ.
  • Advocate for maximizing storytelling across the organization to meet organizational development, marketing, communications, and direct service goals.
  • Participate in CSC’s strategic planning processes, including developing long-range development, fundraising, digital innovation, and marketing goals.
  • Contribute as an Executive leader in the organization and participate in C-Suite activities as appropriate.
  • Engage with the CSC Board of Directors, especially in the areas of the Board Development Committee and Board Annual Commitment Plans.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 12 to 15 years’ direct development and marketing/communications experience.
  • A mission-driven and self-directed professional with experience building, developing and managing results-oriented teams. Demonstrated effectiveness and success in individual and major gifts fundraising, integrated marketing, and event management.
  • Experience driving agency and consultant relationships, including digital, PR, brand, and market research Experience devising and orchestrating marketing campaigns and inbound/content marketing to generate leads and/or donations Exceptional strategic planning skills, with the ability to develop and execute long-term plans that align with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading high-performing teams across multiple function
  • Demonstrated experience and accomplishment in fundraising from foundations, individuals, and corporations.
  • Brings to the role a deep understanding of market research, consumer behavior, and marketing trends.
  • Significant marketing/communications experience with success in benchmarking and demonstrating increased brand awareness.
  • Experience overseeing digital implementation of new innovations to meet organizational goals.
  • Show success in building trust and stewarding relationships, leading, and motivating teams, and experience working cross-departmentally, with Board of Directors, with C-Suite, and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Outstanding verbal, writing, editing and research skills. Meticulous and exacting with a creative bent.
  • Adept at budget development, management, and financial reporting
  • Poised, pro-active, self-assured, organized, and energetic initiative-taker with the willingness to work hands-on to develop and execute a variety of fundraising and communications activities.
  • An analytical thinker, purposeful, collaborative, motivated to complete tasks and succeed.
  • Ability to make decisions, prioritize, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

EXPERIENCE: 8-10 years hands-on development and marketing/communications experience with demonstrated effectiveness and success in individual and major gifts fundraising and corporate partnerships. Significant marketing/communications experience with success in benchmarking and demonstrating increased brand awareness. Experience overseeing digital implementation of innovations to meet organizational goals.
