WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease is the first and still only national organization solely devoted to supporting women living with heart disease – the leading cause of death in women – and advocating and educating on their behalf. WomenHeart was founded in 1999 by three women who had heart attacks while in their 40s and faced many obstacles, including misdiagnosis and social isolation. While they did not know each other at the time of their heart attacks, they shared a common experience about how little information or services were available for women with heart disease. To them, the issue seemed invisible within the women’s health care community. Today WomenHeart is the most dynamic organization in the women’s heart health space, leading national public health education campaigns on various topics in women’s heart health; leading the WomenHeart National Hospital Alliance – a partnership program between WomenHeart and hospital committed to gender specific cardiovascular care; and providing free patient support services to women heart disease patients nationwide in an effort to empower them to take charge of their heart health.
This organization has completed the National Health Council’s Standards of Excellence Certification Program and meets the highest standards of accountability, ethical practice, organizational effectiveness, and good public stewardship.
