Statement on the Verdict in the Chauvin Trial
04/20/2021
The following is a statement by Randall Rutta, Chief Executive Officer, National Health Council:
The verdict in the trial of Officer Chauvin in the death of George Floyd again shines a spotlight on racism and the inequities seen in this country every day. We know this is true when it comes to health and health care. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently declared racism a public health threat. Systemic racism causes life-long negative effects on the mental and physical health of Black Americans and other individuals in marginalized communities. The National Health Council and patient advocacy community are actively seeking change so that we live in a society in which all people have access to quality, affordable, sustainable health care that respects personal goals and aspirations to promote the best possible health outcomes. We have a long way to go. For more information, see our health equity, diversity, and inclusion page.
